Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS)

Enables voice telephone users and people who have difficulty hearing or speaking to communicate by telephone. TRS relies on communications assistants (CAs) to relay the content of calls between users of TTYs and users of traditional handsets (voice users). STS (speech-to-speech) is a relay service for people with speech disabilities who have difficulty being understood on the phone. STS CAs are trained with different speech patterns and language recognition skills. The CA makes the call and repeats the words exactly.

The FCC has implemented 7-1-1 for access to Telecommunications Relay Services all over the country. There is no longer a need to remember a state’s TRS number.
